An epitope is defined as the chemical structure recognized by antigen specific receptors of the immune system (antibodies and/or T cell receptors). In the case of most T cell epitopes, the epitope is defined as the structure that is presented in association with specific MHC molecules, and is bound by the variable regions of specific TCRs. Likewise, a B cell epitope is any structure bound by antibodies (monoclonal or polyclonal) through their variable regions. Both linear and conformational epitopes are considered within the scope of our project. For IEDB, even if no TCR is known to bind the MHC bound peptide it will be included in the database.
